The Power of Group Dance: 4

Yang LiPing and dancers perform “Spirit of the Peacock”

I watched her solo first and then this group performance, both of which moved me almost to tears. The solo shows great attention to detail, the group shows a collective power and a sense of belonging, aiding in storytelling and scene setting. Both pieces work because of their honesty, energy and emotion by drawing the audience in first off with a building, inspirational track, then by mimicking movements of the bird capturing the imagination. The quirkiness of the animal is portrayed making the piece very endearing and playful and yet this sits perfectly alongside the elegant beauty of the bird.

Yang LiPing is a very talented dancer, capturing the essence of the peacock with every movement, working with the music, neither one dominating the other. I feel there are rare times when we can dance not a choreography nor an improvised piece but some hidden form, a secret form, that can be unlocked not with the mind, not consciously but with the heart.

Watch it a couple of times and let me know what you think..
